Selfishness creates selflessness

18.pm. 30.11.2019

The end of November, the last November of this decade.

Sometimes I feel such self-space as Library, Learning Center, or Common Room are truly competitive. People come in groups and chase for good seats. Sometimes, they don’t even seat there but just to occupy the positions by throwing in their personal belongings. They are afraid of not having a good slot if they come later. The initiatives sound smart and proactive, but to me it is more like a childish behavior. I must admit that this is my judgment though part of a life principle to keep in mind is always to suspend judgment. But it is sometimes better to analyze people’s way of being to define what is proper, and not.

occupied spots (some are out for meals which is fine)

I like the human-centered design of these places very much which have the power to inspire learners to be creative and focused. Yet the side-effect has nothing to do with the structure but humans, as always. The elements of external ruins merely come from what we need and then respond greedily. Would those who are yearning for taking a good corner (in advance) ever think of other late-comers, work-lovers or just simply someone seeking to settle down? The time they are not physically available means a lot to the latter because their needs are instant, and at that moment. The latter might be left disappointed and annoyed as if they are doomed to be outside. Their hunger for work gets disrupted, their intention gets interrupted, and their readiness gets disturbed. It is all about humans’ selfishness. In this case, the selfishness can’t make others outstanding like Mr Jack Sim’s theory, instead, it negatively harms others’ performances and mood to start a day.

Some of my interpretation perhaps exaggerate the reality, but at least I have been through all those moments and I am telling the truth. One thing I know for sure is the wealth could generate humans’ greediness and the intention to take themselves as the priority. However, humans are lovely on the other spectrum as well. The fact is such that I have to calm myself down and I know I could find the way out. Those cool learning places might be the best but not the only ones. Humans are good at accepting the differences, thriving in the misery and adapt to the vulgarity. Taking the example of those “selfish mind” as part of the adversities in life, the late-comers who welcome the truth positively are admirable humans. They survive in a competitive world with happiness and embrace. Personally, I might be in desperate need of an inspiring seat, I won’t do the take-over act. Come to the learning center with good intention and energy, I believe the available seat will come to me. Play the slogan: First come- first serve. It is a more equitable slogan to live. And Mr Jack Sim’s theory still works, selfishness creates selflessness.
